Feb 2018 Quick TipZ

My two February tournaments proved that water temperature can be deceptive in figuring out what stage bass will be in. During practice I started with a ChatterBait and Project Z Swim Jig to quickly cover water and locate pre spawn groups since the water had just warmed to 50-52 degrees. After catching several fish I moved further back in the pocket and immediately started noticing wakes and boils nearly every cast with the swim jig. What I found were bass already on beds because of recent warm weather and longer days.

When bass first move shallow to spawn they are very easily spooked and tough to catch. Long casts and small baits were key to both solid finishes. While practicing I spooked lots of fish off of beds but knew I could return during the tournament and pick them up. FattyZ rigged on Shaky HeadZ and ZinkerZ rigged weightless are perfect for long casts and quiet splashdowns. They are easy meals for bass and there's no wrong way to fish them.

Water temperature will be the reason for eggs hatching but the length of day will be the first reason bass start bedding. Remember that they will be nervous at first so stealth and non threatening baits will be key to catching the big girls.

Tight lines guys,
Kelly Keith
