This was the first Gulf SW Division tournament of the HT Redfish Series in Lake Charles, LA. Being a slot tournament we focused our efforts on locating redfish in the upper end of the slot - around 27". Due to the deteriorating weather conditions we decided to fish deep structure with Z-Man StreakZ in new penny and space guppy colors. We took shelter from the wind on the lee side of the jetties, and took advantage of the current coming around to that side to naturally position our baits in front of the fish. In my mind the key was concentrating on a couple of the larger rocks in 15 to 16 feet of water. The fish seemed to concentrate around these particular rocks, and the bouyancy of the Z-Man StreakZ made it an ideal bait to use in this situation. Due to the strength of the current and the depth, our presentation consisted of using 3/4 and 1 ounce egg sinkers ahead of a 4/0 worm hook rigged with StreakZ. Once the bait was on the bottom we would slow hop it, and when contacting the structure pause it for a second or two. This would give the bait just enough time to do a little dance and entice bites. The floating characteristics of the Streakz and the strength of the current were key factors for our pattern. It was the perfect bait for our situation. Our best fish measured 26 7/8" and was a little over 8 lbs and our second fish measured 26 1/2" and was a little over 7 1/2 lbs for winning total of 15.90 lbs. Thank you Z-Man for a great product!
